Summary
In the article "Man, woman or me? Conflicting identities as evidenced by

cross-gender name changes" Antti Leino explains the problem of identity and name.  She points out three posssible conflicts :  conflicts between one’s personal identity; second, one’s gender identity; and third, the overall goal to fit in as a member of one’s target gender.
In the beginning, she states that virtually everyone learns in early childhood that there are two kinds of people: women and men. The criteria for this division are anatomical, but biological sex is seen through the various socially constructed layers that constitute gender. So, sex and gender happen to be connected and there are languages in which gender manifests itself. But the problem is not in the manifesting gender, but in the considering to one or another gender. Antti Leino references on the research that states that gender is a psychological status, and the problem is in the defining of the individual and  attributing him/herself to it. As a result, such a strong opposition of feminine and masculine gender is not appropriate anymore.
The author explains how names become gender-specifict-the gender of a given name is usually aligned with the sex of the name-bearer, or at least indifferent to it, either a name is entrenched in the common onomasticon as belonging to one gender or the other, or it has not  become gender-specific in this way. The gender distribution of a name changes over time, so that the name gets associated with only one gender  or a name-bearer may have a gender identity that does not match their physical sex and legal gender.
Also, she gives a statistics, which shows that there is a tension to change gender-specific name non-specific one. And the more younger people are the calmer they accept getting a new name.
In conclusion, changing names over the gender boundary is always a balancing act between personal and gender identity, and the more attached one is to their old namethe harder it is to change.Hard or not, though, many feel it has to be done: the most important result of this study is that gender is an overwhelmingly important aspect ofidentity also with regards to one's name.

To be honest, I don`t approve of the idea of psychological gender, and it was a challenging thing to read this article. Nevetheless it starts me thinking:
1. Will we refuse using all gender-specific words, thus maling the language non-gender specific
2. Why it is an easy thing for young people to change their names

  1. Hello Zhenya, thank you for preparing the summary of the article.

Can you do me a favour and change the colour scheme of your blog. The thing is that it is really difficult to read because of it.

    Thanks
